Can You Skin Grizz?

Some days I just want to chuck it all, buy a mule, and become a mountian man like Jeremiah Johnson. Robert Redford made this film in 1972 and as a kid I thought that this might be a good profession for me, as I'm fond of the great outdoors and being alone doesn't bother me. At the time it seemed like a much more viable career path than big game hunter, cowboy, explorer, or novelist. I'm a pretty fair shot. I cook a mean rabbit, and the trappings of city life don't hold much appeal for me, but I don't know how to skin a grizz, and that might be a problem.

This clip is the funniest of the whole movie. If you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it.

Enjoy!

  2. It's a great movie. Based on true events, Jeremiah "Liver-Eater" Johnson wasn't as nice as Redford's rendition. The Crow had killed his family and he, in turn, began killing Crow. He would mutilate his victims in various ways, including cutting out their liver and eating it.

  3. Great movie. I like the scene where Johnson comes across the old man frozen who had left a note that "this heres a good rifle, killt the bar that broke ma legs"

  4. My mom watched this movie over and over and over, but not to consider her future career.

  5. Skinning a grizz is a two-step process, it seems:
    1. Get the grizz to sit still for a minute or two
    2. Skin him

Seems easy enough. Give it a shot, Doc, and let us know how it goes.

  7. Cooper Green: I could use a little help in the "get him to hold still" department. Do I hypnotize him? Do I insult his mother and all of bear-kind and suggest that he would make a better rug than a predator? Should I show him color-glossy pictures of girl bears giving each other "the business"? Should I give him a whole pack of bubble gum? Any suggestions would be a help. I'm sure they teach this sort of thing in the Canadian Armed Services, but I have yet to find good advice as to how to accomplish this task.

Big Orange: No. This was filmed in a place called Alpine Loop Utah.
