Moonshine and GetkristiLove

In history's checkered past, it has been suggested that the moon makes people do strange things. Most of these tales involved werewolves and psychotics sacrificing virgins or children to demons in exchange for power or wealth. I don't know much of anything along these lines, but I do know from personal experience that a full moon does tend to influence even "regular" people, myself included. My brother, Bill the cop, has often told tales of people who don't normally act up getting in trouble with the law when the moon is full. The moon is responsible for our tides because of it's gravity, so why shouldn't people be affected as well?

When I purchased my canoe and decided to make a grand trip of it, I must admit that I was under the influence of the moon. I did something that was totally out of charactor for me. I spent money I didn't have on a goofy dream that I'd harbored for some time and I put a plan into action, both of which are counter to my nature.

I was surprised at myself, and for some odd reason, at the support that I got. After all, what I was planning to do was silly. It was silly in the same way as wearing a grass skirt to a job interview. Unless you were trying out for a hula dancing position, there was no good reason to do it, but I did it anyway, and people I only know from reading their blog backed me up to the Nth degree.

For this, I am truly thankful.

Skyler's Dad, Some Guy, Sisters #1 & #2, and BSUWG all egged me on with well wishes and taunts about it ending in misery much like the movie "Deliverence", but the one comment that sealed the deal more than any other came from GetkristiLove.

I reproduce it here in it's entirety.

"First, thanks for your kind words on my blog. Second, this is not madness at all... well except that you spelled kerflooey correctly without knowing it. The rest sounds totally sane and quite doable to me. And just so you know I'm serious, I won't make a joke about looking for beaver in the Ohio valley, or make any squealing pig jokes.

A dream such as this is the perfect reason to embark upon it if you ask me. Because it's about the journey, not the destination, no matter where you end up or how long it takes.

My hat's off to you Doc, I hope you get to go."

Those words will hang with me for a long, long time. After all, it isn't often in everday life that someone reassures you that you aren't mad.

Should time and tide allow and I do write a book about my journey, let me reassure all of you that you will all be included in the dedication, but Flannery's name will head the list, as who would let their husband venture off like this?

  4. Blushing... it's not every day that I prove someone is sane.

And I agree, that Flannery sure earned the honor to be graffiti on the ship.

Congrats on a successful journey Doc and for packing a folder full of delicious adventure stories.
