Some things are meant to be the way they're gonna be
'Cos you can't stop time or change history
Sometimes all you saw were the things you wanted to see
if you be lookin for the answer you would have to go to me
'Cos now you've only got a moment boy
To get it right to get it right to get it right to get it right
So if you really wanted me you'd show me how
'Cos I'm your little remedy if you take me now
Oh if you really wanted me you'd show me how
'Cos I'm your little remedy if you take me now
"Little Remedy" By Sandi Thom
Just when I thought that I had broken out of my writing lull and the rut I found myself in, I was brought back by forces beyond my control. The whole family caught a bad, bad cold. I nursed Flan and the girls, ate my vitamins, and prayed I would escape unscathed. Such was not the case. I convalesced in front of the computer but the only thing I could think to write was, "Oh, I'm so sick! So very, very sick!", over and over again like the mad author in "The Shining", but that gets old for the reader and the writer quickly. Besides, by the third line I was so out of it that I started to misspell things. I have only just recovered somewhat.
What did I do on the computer, you might ask? Well, I was working away at one of my all-time greatist time-wasters, a computer game called "Pharoah". It is a city-builder type game, but you get to build pyrimids, farm, trade, as well as warring with the Nubians and the Canaanites occasionally. This game can suck me in for hours at a stretch as it is very emmersive in the culture and history, but I'll be honest, I just like watching as my peasants brew the beer.
So I found myself listless, sick, writer's-blocked, and in an extraordinary funk and I desperately needed something to boot me out of it. I think perhaps I've found it.
Should you, God forbid, find yourself in a similiar situation, try this: see the sunrise. Not just see it all bleary eyed, staggering home from some drunken outing that turned out wrong, but make it an occasion and spend it with someone you love. Like a picnic perhaps. A little snack like raspberries, and if you don't have to work, a little bubbly to wash them down. Take a few minutes as you snuggle close against the morning chill and watch the wonder of the dawning of a new day and contemplate the marvelous possibilities that it might hold. Draw in a lungful of the fresh damp air and hold it for a second. You can almost taste the promise of hope and life starting anew.

In a pinch, sunset will do, but it just isn't the same somehow.

P.S.- I've included a Youtube video for the Sandi Thom song mentioned above. I heard this song over the P.A. at work and the line about, "I'm your little remedy, take me now" tends to stick with me for some reason. I selected this version because it was the only one that wasn't live and you could hear the words. The song quality is good, but the video seems to be a heart-felt I Love You from a girl to her boyfriend that is constructed solely of stills taken from one of the Final Fantasy games, but there is a reason they say love is blind, and in this case, tacky. Here ya go...
I agree. There's nothing like a good sunrise. Hope you're feeling better!
ReplyDeleteYeah, nothing like a "sunrise." I "Watch the sun rise" two or three times a night sometimes. It's awesome.
ReplyDeleteFeel better, man!
Pfft. Bugger YouTube, I wanna see the video that goes along with the sunset pix!! Meee-yow!!
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, I'm becoming practically nocturnal again now that I've got no lil' ones to tend to, so sunrises are out of th' question, plus there's too damned many trees.
Y'all better get better before I motor my butt o'er there for a Tiki nite!! Unless we all get sick and someone's willin' to spend all day in bed with me, drinkin' tea and reading books.
Hmmm, I just connected you with Flannery yesterday on Beth's blog. Then I saw the mention here.
ReplyDeleteSome Guy- Thanks for stopping by, and yes, I'm recovering, but slowly.
ReplyDeleteErr- "two or three times a night sometimes". You are either a bad liar or a very lucky person. I hope it is the latter.
Cap'n Ergo- I like tea and I have a lot of reading to do, but I hear you are a cover hog. Oh well, as long as you are the one getting up to brew the tea, I have no complaints.
Gifted Typist- I'm sorry. I thought it was common knowledge that Flannery and I are a husband and wife team. We were once voted blogdom's cuteist couple by Beth. Good to hear from you!

B.t.w- I've had this picture on my computer for months. When I saved it, I didn't know what I was going to use it for, but it just seemed too damn funny not to share.
