Wish You Were Here...

I don't know what kind of fun you have been up to but I've been having mine in spades. Flannery took a few days off and my schedule worked out to where I could have a mini-vacation. To trump that, Cap'n Ergo is in town, and he and Elizabeth have been coming over in the evenings and the hilarity continues to ensue. We have eaten like Roman Senators, laughed and sang old dirty drinking songs, swapped lies, and kept the American brewing industry working three shifts. We have gone to Tiki, soaked in the hot tub, and watched cartoons. We even had silly hat night, but no photos were taken so as to protect the guilty and the mildly camera shy.

Last night I tried Saki for the first time. It was not at all what I expected. The Cap'n cleverly let the bottle soak in the hot tub for a few minutes so that it could be served warm in the traditional manner. The initial taste was light on the palate, but it had a bit of a smoky dry vermouth finish. It went very well with the huge spread of Chinese food we were eating. I know that Saki is a Japanese wine, but none of us are into sushi, and a little cross-culturelism isn't a bad thing. And as good as the Saki was, it really set my taste buds yearning for a cold beer, and there was plenty of that. Because of a little miscommunication between Flannery and I, we had both purchased beer, so our little fridge was just groaning with a variety of good brews that I seldom have the money to buy. I felt like a king as I layed next to Flannery last night and we both agreed that it was amazing that so many good times could be squeezed into so short a time. Then we slept the sleep of the just, or at least, the just after.

To top the whole thing off, I slept in today, and for a life-long night owl like me this was better than a fat wallet. I rose promptly at the crack of noon to a quiet house, took a long hot shower, made coffee, and lounged in the barber chair in my flannel robe and tried to think about what I had done to deserve to be this lucky and happy. My work called and left a message on the answering machine asking me if I would like to take another paid holiday next week, and if so, when. This just keeps getting better, and we haven't even gotten to Saturday when Blogfest Ohio will descend on Mulligan's Pub to celebrate Flannery's Birthday.

Honestly, the only thing that could possibly make this any better was if you were here.

  1. Sounds like fun. I wish I was there, too. Stupid work and gasoline and time-space not bending to my will. >:(

  4. Not to sound like a sake snob, but I am one, so I must tell you that there are all types of sakes including those served best warm, chilled, or room temperature. My favorites are of the junmai daigingo flavor (more of the rice is fermented away) and they are served chilled and very refreshing. My sister likes the cloudy, unfiltered stuff (nigori) because it tends to be sweeter.

Feel free to explore the Culture of Sake Doc!

  5. GkL- My adventure into Sake/saki? is just begining and any advice you have to offer is appreciated. I know my taste in wines runs to the sweet side, so perhaps I need to investigate the nigori, but not before I take your recommendation of the junmai daigingo, just because I hate to see rice wasted. I mean really, if you are going to a wedding, throw coupon books. They'll need 'em.

P.S.- The above comment re: Thankee Sai! was just Cap'n Ergo using my computer.

  6. Doc, listen to GKL, she knows well of what she speaks! I never cared for Saki much until she showed me what good stuff served chilled is like!

  7. Then we slept the sleep of the just, or at least, the just after. That's a perfect line my friend.

Sounds like good times, good times. Have a great time as you Mulliganize your dear Flannery. That wasn't meant to sound dirty.
