After A Long Night At Tiki, I Brought Home A Bum

After a long night at Tiki, I brought home a bum. Needless to say, Flannery was not amused. What follows is an animated photoplay of what happened. In this, I am played by the gentleman in the crumpled top hat while Flannery has her hair up in curlers. You may recognize the pink gentleman as he is one cool cat.

This is from the time when drunks were still funny and is one of Lucy & Riley's favorites.

Have a grand weekend you bums,

A Song Of Myself and The Card Seen 'Round The World

"Poems don't have to rhyme and they don't have to be dirty, but people seem to prefer them that way." -Red Green.

I don't read a lot of poetry as a rule, although I suspicion that I read a bit more of it than your average joe. Mostly I just reread stuff that I like: Rudyard Kipling, Robert Service, Walt Whitman, and Roy Bentley.

As far as writing poetry goes, let's face it, I suck. I can recite several dirty limericks but I don't think I could write one. The only assignment I ever flunked in English class was when we had to write five haiku's. I couldn't come up with one. My mind just doesn't work in five-seven-five format. I'm more of a three-five-nine guy myself. Whatever, it all works out to seventeen.

So today I'm casting about for something to read in the Jeep as I spend a fair amount of time waiting in it. I find my copy of "Tales of the Yukon" by Robert Service and started reading. After a few pages I had a certain rhythm in my head and I put the book down and put my own words to it. While I am no wordsmith, I felt the muse was upon me and jotted a few lines down. I figured what the heck? If old Walt, pictured above, could sing of his body electric, then by gum I could pen this little ditty.

Ode to Beer

Beer, Oh Beer;
You've made your point clear.
And of all the World's earthly delights,
You've always been true and graced my dark weary nights.

The monk he lives on bread and water,
But I could never live on such meager fare.
My knees would never take all the kneelin',
But I hear they brew good beer!

The Kings have all the power,
And the rich man wears his fine cap.
But as for me & mine,
We'll be in the room with the tap.

Pity the poor teetotaler as 'e rises to greet the day;
For when he comes home at night,
'E's got no mug
To ease him from his day.

I 'ad me a true love once,
But I won't miss her in this lifetime.
She left me for a preacher man,
And because 'e drank wine!

Now I've heard tell that the devil himself drove a down-bound train,
With wheels well greased and black.
The boiler is full of lager beer,
And the train's about to jump the track!

Now when my time comes to be passing,
As it does to men far and near.
I think I will find myself gasping,
"Barmaid! More beer over 'ere!"

Bury me with little fanfare,
In a quiet ceremony.
Don't bring flowers bring hops,
As that's the ferryman's fee.

And should I get to Heaven,
And walk on that great golden strand.
Lord, I hope you'll remember,
That I'm a beer drinking man!

There you have it. If I could have thought of how to make it dirty, you know I would have.

On another note, the postman scared me to death the other day. He rang the doorbell and made me sign for something, which he has never done before. I thought the letter might have been the IRS wondering why I had claimed $28,000 on "snacks", as I hear they are looking for some new income. It turns out it was a letter from Dale. I should have known by the stamps.

He had sent the Card Seen 'Round The World. Make no mistake, Flannery and I begged very hard to be the next on the list and Dale was kind enough to send it along to us. The only problem was we broke rules numbers two & six. First off was six, as we kept the card for three weeks and on the mantle no less. I would like to say that we have played by the rules, but that would be a lie. We cheated and got the card under false pretences, but that's how Flannery is.

Should you like to see the card as it stands, look here. Our contributions appear below. Click to make bigger.

I wonder if fish have nightmares?

I'm proud of my fish cartoon, as it is the rare occasion that the idea that I had in my head and the finished product turn out alike.

But in drawing the cartoon, it made me wonder; Do fish have nightmares about being trapped under air? I don't know. I don't even know if they sleep, or if their dreams of flying scare the crap out of them.

What do you think?

Beware The Moonlit Night Down By The Pond

I've been reading about Gary Larson and was inspired. I have some other cartoons that I'll put up in the coming days, provided I can get my *expletive deleted* internet to flippin' cooperate.

I'm hoping to have it fixed now that I have bribed my next door neighbor, Jerry the cable guy, into coming over and taking a look at it, but I know the trouble is in the line, as everything else is working fine. For over a month, my internet connection has been dodgey. I am frequently dropped off and the load time is slower than dial-up. I've been trying to keep up with your blog and all the new ones I've added to the list, but if you have pictures on your blog, it might take ten minutes to pull it up. And video, forget it. It loads 3-4 seconds at a time with fifteen to twenty minute lag time in between. It took me three weeks to watch the whole Betty Page video that Bub's put up, but I feel it was time well spent.

I leave you with promises of more toons, and something my Grandfather used to tell me:

"I'm going upstairs and fuck your Grandma! Be good and stay out of muh beer!"

The Cap'n

I promised Dale a cartoon of his own some time ago and I just finished it. At the same time I promised one to Cap'n Ergo Jinglebollocks. Here it is Sir. I hope you like it.

Sistas #1 & #2, your's is in the works as I've finished a rough draft, but give me a few days. I just wanted to say that you haven't been forgotten.

Should anyone else care for a cartoon, leave me a note in the comments. I would be happy to oblige, but forgive me, it takes me a while.

Dale's Long Awaited Cartoon

I can honsetly say that this has been the hardest cartoon I've ever penned. I drew this one eight times and this is the best of the bunch and I'm still not happy with it but perhaps Dale will be forgiving.
This was the photo I had to go by and I don't think I really did him justice. He should have been more broad shouldered, but I tried very hard to capture his sauveness, culture, and rugged good looks. Perhaps the spats and cigarette holder were a bit over the top but you can get away with that in a cartoon. I tried to work in all of the elements he suggested including the leaky ceiling, the curtain climbing cat, and Honeypot, but the Korean Bagel Lady could only be represented by the poppy seed bagel next to his flute of champagne, even if it looks like a doughnut with sprinkles. Food is hard to draw as well as humorless Korean women.

Dale, I am truly sorry that it has taken me this long to come up with this. I can only beg you forgiveness and promise you that the next time you find yourself on this side of Lake Erie, I will buy you an expensive dinner, lots of beer, and we will venture out to the local opera and we can critique it together, but pardon me if I treat it like a Marx Brother's movie. Then we'll go to Tiki.

To Err, With Love; Cartoons

These are all old drawings I did when I was in college. I doodled some from comic books, and at the time I was listening to a lot of Iron Maiden and it influenced my art. I promised my buddy, Err, that I would post some cartoons just for him and here they are. Feel free to swipe one for your avatar if you feel so inclined Err. I think my self portrait looks kind of like you without the goatee. If these won't do, say so. I'll draw something else for you.

A Little Something For Vikkitikkitavi: CARTOONS!

"I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: "O Lord make my enemies ridiculous." And God granted it." -Voltaire

"Stand upright, speak thy thoughts, declare The truth thou hast, that all may share; Be bold, proclaim it everywhere: They only live who dare." -Voltaire

"The ideal form of government is democracy tempered with assassination." -Voltaire

"To hold a pen is to be at war." -Voltaire

"Well that was a fuck of a storm." -Noah.
***

I'm back. I have been away too long, but the horrible storm has given me the chance to get a few things out of the way. I have written a few reviews of new beers I've tried, watched some good movies I'll pass along, and I've penned a few cartoons for Vikkitikkitavi that I promised her days ago.

I'm sure all of my Dear and Gentle Readers are familiar with Vik. (You don't mind if I call you Vik do you?) She is over at Bells On with her finger firmly planted on the pulse of the nations politics. If you haven't been following her writing, you have cheated yourself out some much needed exposure to a razor sharp mind and a biting whit that can cut to the core of truth in today's bullshit. And God bless her for it. We could use many more like her. This young lady has captured the plight we find ourselves in and offered some of the most well reasoned thinking of anyone I know, much like the good Voltaire whose words head this article.

A while back, I posted a few of my silly cartoons and offered to draw one for anyone who asked. She said she would be honored to have one done, and as anyone who knows me, I am a sucker for flattery. So I gave it a go. Here is the first:

This was my first effort and it was undertaken after a long night of reviewing several different domestic beers, so please, forgive a clumsy drunken cartoonist. As a child, I read quite a bit of Kipling, and to this day can recite a few, but “Rikkitikkitavi" isn’t amongst them. I drew the pic from one off the internet and this one was crossing some marshy ground, that is why his back right paw is in the mire. And if anyone can speak well of the state of our mire, it’s Vik.

But it would be wrong of me not to include everyone else into this, so let’s make this a bit of a puzzle. As I am the kind of guy who could never find the sailboat in those stupid “See the Picture Amongst The Dot’s”, let’s make this easy. Find: a skull, a spider, an oil well, a flower, a vine, a gravestone, the number 12, a red hat, a smiley face, grapes and a donkey. Yes, I’m sure you found them all, but how long did it take you?

Next, the cartoon that Vikkitikkitavi later asked for is somewhat flawed too. I explained to her that I don’t draw women well, but she defended herself by saying that she rarely acted like a lady, so that was okay. And while she is known for her truthful and honest opinion, I have to cast a shadow of doubt that she rarely acts like a lady, and if she doesn't, hell, those are the kind of broads I like to hang out with anyway. While she has no pelvis in this picture (as I couldn’t make the chair line up with her body) it isn’t a totally bad effort. But can you find the seven things that are red? Can you find: the axe, the spilled bottle of beer, the number of speakers and drawers to her desk, the red hat, or how many “A’s” were used?

Should you like a cartoon of your own, don’t hesitate to ask, and Vik, it has been a pleasure. Think of it as a small "thank you" from a regular reader.

Cheers,

Doc

My Beer Cartoons

Thank you all for your patience in reading the fluff that has collected in my draft file or "Notes From The Bottom Drawer", and to celebrate my return, I offer up a few cartoons I've penned. Enjoy!

For the dog lover, not to mention my friends in Colorado.

Art For Art's Sake

At times, my job would be much better accomplished with rollerskates, but like most jobs, it occasionally has it's slow periods. In these few brief moments, when I'm not scurrying about the bakery, I try to spend my time constructively. I doodle; whatever occurs to me at the time and I try to reproduce it to the best of my paltry ability. Here are a few examples.

My coworker of two months is leaving us. Her boyfriend is in jail and they were trying to get enough money for them to get their own place, but that is going to the bail bondsman. To top it all off, they fired her today ten minutes before her quit time. As a goodbye gift drew her this:
My humble nod to Lewis Carrol. I don't much care for the Dormouse.
A summation of my classical art training.
This was somewhat inspired by all the great opening credits to all those James Bond movies. Mind you, the perspective is all wrong, but the sentiment is honest. I have a deep and abiding love of drowning olives. I'm not much for martinis, but I love olives. It is the reason that most all-you-can-eat salad bars won't let me in anymore.
This one is me as a Musketeer. I drew it and I thought it needed a speech balloon, so I looked it over and wrote the first thing that came to mind. I think it made the whole thing.
I'm always fishing for ideas, so if you have some suggestions, let me doodle you one.
